The Lowdown
This is a silent film version of the story made in 1922, which is a straightforward adaptation of the novel. It has the distinction of being the first full-length screen adaptation.
Some Observations
- Leaving aside the obvious difference that there is no spoken dialogue, this is actually pretty similar to the other 90-120 minute film versions in terms of the challenges they face in telling the story. As usual, there is a focus on the betrayal and imprisonment aspects, at the expense of the revenge, which feels rushed.
- There are a number of plot elements omitted and changed, and there is a bit more of a focus on the 'swashbuckling' aspect (although not as much as some). The revenge against both Fernand and Villefort now each take the form of a duel, with pistols and swords respectively.
- One interesting thing about watching silent films is how they compensate for the handicap of not being able to have any spoken dialogue in interesting and creative ways. As a result there are is some great acting just with facial expressions in this, as well as some great shots / camera angles. 'Creativity loves constraint'.
The Verdict
This is a fairly faithful adaptation within the constraints of the short format, and may be of note to those with an interest in silent cinema, but if you're just looking for a film version of The Count of Monte Cristo it's probably best to start off with Richard Chamberlain or Jim Caviezel.
